(will we see the Ferrari Barchetta today I wonder? Wikipedia image)
The sun is up and they are rolling the cars out on Fifth Avenue this morning for the annual cars on fifth classic car show. I know, I know many of us have been to car shows, seen cool cars and some of us can take or leave the whole classic car thing. But … there is something spectacular about Ferrari’s and other classic cars lined up in the dead of winter, outside, on a nice day, side to side all the way to the Gulf of Mexico in our fair town. Wow.
There are many great cars out at the show today but let’s start with the Ferrari’s. In 1929 just before the big economic crash and with about the worst timing possible to start a new business, Enzo Ferrari started his legendary company. The cars and the man serve as a testament to the hard work and dreams capable of surviving the crash and a world war to emerge as one of the greatest car lines ever. Even as a native Detroiter and partial to the stories of the American car industry pioneers and stories I have to give a tip of the hat to Enzo.
The sunshine does not seem fair really. Another big snow storm is headed for New England this morning and the usual gray skies hang over parts of the wintry midwest but not in Naples today. The high today is 66 – chilly for these parts but not enough to keep our outdoor fun-in-the-sun lifestyle going strong.
(speaking of Enzo Ferrari, he called the Jag e-type the most beautiful car he ever saw)
Last week a Ferrari owner told me he likes to ship his car to fun places and make a drive of it, rolling in to small towns and turning heads. A little showy for my tastes but it does sound like fun. “What if the darn thing breaks down in the middle of nowhere?” I asked. No problem – one call to Ferrari service and you are rescued. Sounds like the manufacturer has its act together and supports the touring lifestyle. The local dealer will be there today to show you the latest. Who knows, some lucky person may get a Ferrari for Valentine’s day today.
(perhaps the British invasion will be in full force today)
Ok let’s say you do not like Ferrari’s and are into other types of cars – muscle cars, English sports cars, and more. You are still in luck. Head to the east side of fifth avenue south and feast your eyes on some incredible machines.
Maybe you don’t like cars but are into people. Amuse yourself by walking up to a car owner, frequently camped out by his favorite machine and itching to talk with you, and strike up a conversation. Stories of how they found the car, how they fixed up the car, how they feel about the car, how they will never sell the car, how the kids are never going to get the car, etc. are sure to add to your list of fun conversations for the week. These folks are into cars. This is what they do. This is what some of them live for. Want some inspiration for your own passions? Just listen to these folks and how they pour their time and energy into the pursuit of something beautiful. It will get you fired up to do your thing too.
(my friend Carlos may have his beautifully restored MG out today)
I like our charming little town of Naples. Charming and small as only two streets sum up most of the action. Oh can our little town flex its social and entertaining muscle and make a lot of fun for everyone in the Florida sunshine with this cars on fifth festival.
If you know our geography just about every parking space from 3rd street to 9th street on 5th avenue south will be taken up with some breathtaking machines. Ferraris for sure, but also the British invasion with the Healeys, Jags, and Triumphs. Detroit will be heard from with muscle cars like that beautiful GTO or all those super sport models and don’t forget that big finned Cadillac which sent my Detroit heart a racing.
(yes you can stick your head under the hood of many of these cars today)
The real story of the show however may be the people. The commitment of these car owners is really something. There is a flipper or two but mainly there is a love affair going on between these people and their cars. They went to great lengths to rescue and restore these machines. Picture book after picture book of painstaking and skilled work is frequently on display at the cars documenting their work and their story. Be sure to have a look.
Then there is the 1966 corvette owned for almost fifty years by the same man. Last year the owner told me how he bought his corvette with his father just before he went off to Vietnam. When he returned he bought his father’s share of the car and still has the car today. Original, mint and part of the family. That folks is a one owner 1966 corvette and I can almost guarantee he is never going to sell that car.
(over in the muscle car section maybe we will see a Chevy Super Sport get loose)
Then there is my friend Carlos and his wife with their beautifully restored MG. The car was hard to see because there were so many people jammed in around the car but last year my iPhone let me get a couple of pictures of it. Who doesn’t remember these cute little bugs buzzing around car rally’s or just running off hell bent into the country side with one happy driver and perhaps a terrified passenger? Well done Carlos – I hope you are back this year.
I must also say hats off to the city fathers. With so much development in recent years north and east there were some questions about the old part of town. Challenges ranging from decreasing commercial rents to a generally slower night life in years gone by. But today after some very hard work Fifth Avenue is jumping almost every weekend with events these days. Forget parking because you cannot find it. The Naples News estimated 30,000 people visiting a six block section of one street. Come by bike or park close by and walk in. Our little hamlet on the Gulf is jumping today.
(wouldn’t it be cool to see this classic Bronco in the show?)
