We joined some very good friends at the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club last night (full disclosure we are members) for some great food and more importantly, good friendship. There is something about boating that draws people in and promotes fun and good spirits. Boating is a big part of the Naples lifestyle with the town’s perch on the Gulf of Mexico combine with the Gordon River forming Naples Bay. If you like year round boating or just want to send your boat here for the winter season there is a lot to offer. Let’s walk through a few examples.
Boating in Naples for 2012 will kick off with fireworks at the Naples Pier. Hanging out with friends on a boat in the ocean watching those fireworks could be a wonderful way to usher in the new year. Be careful out there. There are a lot of boats and navigating in the dark can be tricky.
Another local option, the south end of Keewaydin Island offers day trippers the advantages of an inside beach, a walk to ocean side and plenty of people to party and talk with. Beach your smaller boat and hop on shore or anchor up your larger vessel in the bay. Watch the anchoring it is not the best holding ground and you will swing full circle on the tide changes.
How about driving down the back and hanging out on Marco – say the Snook Inn or the Esplanade or Pelican Larry’s or venturing a little further south to Goodland and Stan’s or the Old Club.
What about a weekend on the Captiva and Sanibel barrier islands? Not a bad run north from Naples, plenty to see and do – good restaurants and the absolute beauty of Pine Island Sound. Maybe you will see the Lady Chadwick making her rounds ferrying folks island to island.
One hundred miles to the south are the Florida Keys. From Key West to Key Largo legendary sites – diving, fishing, restaurants and fun. Head down and gunk hole or lay up in the marinas. Watch for the wind shift out of the north as it can be tough to make it back in a blow. Key West airport with flights on the hour can help folks get back if you get stuck.
Over the far horizons lay even more adventures. Travel north up the west coast of Florida and continue on to the circle route – up the Mississippi to Chicago, around the Great Lakes, through the canal and back down the east coast. Or head south to the Bahamas for some unbelievable water and beaches.
So many options – why not start with the fireworks tomorrow night and bring in 2012 with fireworks and good friends?
Remember Naples isn’t just about owning real estate and vacation property – there is a whole lifestyle wrapped around this place with plenty to do – like boating on the back bays and the beautiful Gulf Of Mexico year round.
