Somewhere early in my post “retirement” life I picked up the sport of long distance cycling. Outdoors, ride with friends, cool events and you stay in shape – all good stuff.
One troubling part of cycling here in Naples is the car-bike relationship which for some reason turns into on the road shouting and rights of way violations. Most of my rides are without incident but now and then things flare up, and sometimes people get hurt.
Recently one of our riders, Elayne Jackson went down and was dragged under a county truck. We will leave additional facts and judgments for the courts but one thing you can do to help out Elayne and Naples cycling in general is get out there and ride on Easter Sunday. After Church service (and maybe avoiding a big brunch which will set back your fitness) why not get out there and ride to support Elayne and safe cycling?
The Naples Velo Club is sponsoring the ride, and for the remainder of the blog this morning I will pass along the following information from their website:
We invite all Naples Velo Club members and Club member friends to start your Easter Day in a charitable way in the spirit of this special holiday.
Hop over to Fit and Fuel (Pavilion Shopping Center; NW corner of US 41 and Vanderbilt Beach Road) – 7am Sunday April 8th for a special ride.
We will be riding an A and B Club rides to help raise funds for local rider, Elayne Jackson, to help her and her family with the high medical bills stemming from her horrid run in with a truck/trailer on February 29th.
A $20 donation encouraged and much appreciated, but is NOT REQUIRED. Larger donations are welcome as well.
Note: 100% of the Proceeds for this event will be donated to Elayne Jackson.

We will ride the Sunday Naples Velo route in reverse. B ride – 20/22mph and A ride – 24mph plus.
Approximate distance is 60 miles but for those wishing to return home sooner, there will be numerous options for short-cutting the course or turning off early and returning home for Easter Sunday service.
This ride will not have scheduled stops or SAG support.
Afterward, join us at Fit & Fuel for coffee and treats — part of the proceeds from the sales that morning will be donated as well to assist Elayne.
