Readers of this blog will know there is more to Naples, Florida than owning real estate in a southern resort town. Sure the beaches, restaurants and night life are a lot of fun but oh the paradise which surrounds us.
Take the Everglades for instance – that river of grass running from the center of the state to all destinations south. The unbelievable beauty captured in Clyde Butcher’s black and white photography http://www.clydebutcher.com/online-gallery.cfm), or the endangered panthers roaming their one hundred square mile territories and the bird life of ibis, spoonbills, cormorants, storks and …. you get the idea.
Many efforts have been made to preserve this incredible habitat. Incredible because it is a one of kind natural presence replicated nowhere else in the world. The Glades are in Naples back yard, just a short drive to the east and south and you are in this paradise.
Federal funds were promised under President Clinton but not all of the money showed up. Preservation is farther along now than ten years ago but we have a long way to go.
One recent effort features world-renowned naturalist and photographer Connie Bransilver, artist Nick Petrucci and photographer Clyde Butcher. We had the great pleasure of having Connie and Nick over to our home last night for dinner and learning more about their efforts. Just a couple of hours with these two will open your eyes to the wonder of the Everglades.
Nick and Connie have started the Guardians of The Everglades project (see http://www.guardiansoftheeverglades.com/) which holds real promise for further support. Nick let me know his portrait work is well underway and Connie stated her photos and tapestry contribution should be of interest to all.
Check out these online sites and when you are down here make it a point to explore this paradise beyond the confines of Olde Naples and see what a paradise nature has to offer you.
