Well that will teach me. I guess I was asking for it. These last seven years I tested my “up north” friends asking them for the number of hurricanes to have hit Florida over the last seven years (correct answer is zero). Due to the power of network TV they answer anywhere form 12 to 40+. Well the new correct answer today will be one – Hurricane Isaac cometh.
As much as I like the human spirit in the face of danger I think hurricane parties are pushing the edge. I am not an alarmist either not knowing whether to laugh or hurl insults at those network TV weather folks whipping up anxiety (and probably followers) ahead of these storm events. I do however take these storms seriously. Homes do get damaged, humans can get in deep trouble.
So what to do. Firstly get all the information you can. I like WeatherUnderground.com and Windfinder.com as two sources for storm tracking and you cannot beat NOAA data and warnings. Local newspapers like the Naples News (see http://www.naplesnews.com/news/2012/aug/25/collier-lee-hurricane-tropical-storm-isaac-fla-fl/) provide good advice and information. Figure out a way to stay “online” if the power goes out to keep in touch.
In terms of preparation there are many good sources. This link to advice from the National Hurricane Center (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/prepare/ready.php) will get you started.
Readers of the NaplesBestAddresses blog will know we are big supporters of giving back to our community. We are headed off to help run a Red Cross Emergency Shelter. Cook up a little mac and cheese, set up cots, and ride out the storm together. Check out the Red Cross web site (http://www.gulfcoastredcross.org/) if you are interested in helping out or getting involved. We really do not see many storms like Isaac but when they do arrive it is great to have a bunch of volunteers pitching in to help out.
See you on the other side of this storm and be safe.
